About Ed Shull

Thanks for your interest in me and this site. My name is Ed Shull, I’m 36 years old and I live in Ashland, OR. with my 14 year old son Michael and our Akita, Albus.

I’m an Internet marketing consultant and have worked in the industry for over a decade, which makes me a veteran in Internet years. I spent most of those years as the CEO of USWeb, but I now run a few smaller companies such as Equari, Blogitive and some ecommerce projects like eSnacks.com and DotFlowers.

For fun, I enjoy traveling, writing, reading, movies and music. I also enjoy spending time with my son while he still wants to hang out.

About FilthyLucre.com

I enjoy blogging because it gives me a voice that reaches thousands of strangers each month. It also allows me to give back to the community I use for my own research. It’s a great feeling when you write something that you can see from your logs or comments someone found helpful.

There are a few ways to get to FilthyLucre.com. edshull.com, edwardshull.com and my former blog name, oneblogtoomany.com, all bring you to the FilthyLucre website. The site itself is based on a simple WordPress blog with a custom design by my cousin Shaun, and a nice plug-in we made to help with search engine optimization.

When I decided on the domain name, I found that many people didn’t know what it meant. Lucre, coming from the Latin lucrum, means profit or monetary gain. When William Tyndale was producing his translation of the Bible, he translated aiskhron kerdos, “shameful gain” as filthy lucre. This negative connotation of lucre also comes from middle English, where it was used in reference to illicit gain.

Filthy Lucre has gone on to be an expression, often used tongue-in-cheek, to describe “dirty money” or “blood money”. There is a Sex Pistols album called “Filthy Lucre Live” and more recently an episode of the Showtime series Californiacation was titled Filthy Lucre. (It revolved around the main character getting a big check for selling out his novel to be made into a crappy movie). There was also a band named Filthy Lucre, but I have never heard of them before, so I don’t know if they’re any good.

I liked this name for my blog because, first off, I think OneBlogTooMany was too long. And secondly, because more and more I often feel like a sell-out. My ego-driven, obsessive consumption powers my need to generate more money than most. One evil to propel another, all the time making me a bit more flawed in the process. It’s something I’m trying to tackle in my own life, and I thought naming my blog would prove as useful a reminder (but infinitely less painful) as a tattoo. I did have to pay a decent amount of money for the domain, but the irony makes it all the better.
